Seismic Migration

Seismic migration is a data processing technique for transforming data gathered by seismic reflection surveys into an image of the Earth's structure. Historically, seismic survey data were simply stacked together, reducing noise levels and producing a "stacked section". However, the true locations of reflections are generally misplaced in simple stacked sections. As computing power has increased over the years, different migration processes have been developed for moving (or "migrating") imaged structures closer to their true locations. The more complex the geology, the more complex and expensive the migration process needs to be.

Two such seismic migration techniques are Kirchhoff Pre-Stack Time Migration (KPSTM) and Reverse Time Migration (RTM). Acceleware has developed products for accelerating both KPSTM and RTM.
 

Reverse Time Migration (RTM)

Reverse Time Migration (RTM) is the current state-of-the-art in seismic migration. The strength of RTM stems from the fact that it fully respects the two-way acoustic wave equation, thus improving imaging in areas where complex geology violates the assumptions made in Kirchhoff or one-way wave equation migrations.

RTM provides a high-fidelity image of the most complex geological structures, but its widespread use has been severely hindered by the enormous computing resources required to process the data. This computational bottleneck is being addressed by Acceleware with a patent pending solution (AxRTM), currently in Beta development. Kirchhoff Time Migration (KTM)

Kirchhoff Pre-Stack Time Migration is the most popular migration method in the seismic data processing industry because of its simplicity, efficiency, and feasibility. However processing time can consume weeks or months of compute time. Acceleware's AxKTM library has been specifically designed to maximize the speed of KPSTM, without introducing mathematical approximations.
 

Seismic Modeling

In addition to migration software, Acceleware has also developed an accelerated seismic modeling product, AxWaveSim. Modeling is used for a variety of purposes in the seismic industry, including survey design and interpretation of seismic data. Acceleware`s cluster solution optimizes seismic survey design and enables Quality Assurance of migration outputs.

The video below is a demo simulating the propagation of acoustic waves through the SEG/EAGE Salt Dome Model. The different colors represent different geological formations, in which waves will travel with different velocities. Acoustic waves can be seen (in grey) emanating out from the center of the model, being reflected and refracted at velocity discontinuities.
